FAIRISLE BY THE SEA
2nd - 7th August 2020
This special workshop will be held at a unique home in Whitstable, Kent. I first went to The Battery at Seasalter when I was head designer at Rowan as I art directed three or four photography shoots there. The Battery is a private home and is often used as a photography location house, you would have seen the interior being used in Country Living, Coast and Country Homes and Interiors magazines, as well as my WINTER CROCHET book and in Rowan publications! This is an ‘one off’ opportunity to spend time in this exclusive historic building which sits on Whitstable beach and faces 120ft of secluded sea-front. During each day, The Battery will become our home from home and is not open to the general public at any time. This is a very extraordinary place and as soon as you step foot in this amazing house, you immediately relax and the wonderful hosts, Marilyn and Johnny make you feel very welcome. Marilyn is a great collector of many interesting and unusual things, especially from the 1940’s and 1950’s, and she displays her precious collections throughout the house, she and Johnny are also amazing cooks! This beautiful home, flooded with natural day light, situated right on the beach is the perfect place to unwind, knit and relax…perfect. Each evening we will be enjoying some of the best food Whitstable has to offer with dinner served at The Whitstable Oyster Fish Restaurant, The Sportsman and of course the Hotel Continental.

THE BATTERY is a historic building of Kent and was built in 1873 by the Navy as a part of the coastal defence for the UK. The building consisted at the time of two buildings made of wood, one building being the Drill hall with office, clothes store and the armoury and the second building being the battery with three gun ports facing seaward and another facing west. There was a magazine on the east side but this no longer remains. There also would have been a Parade Ground at the rear of the building. The Admiralty handed over the battery in the early 1900’s to the Royal Naval Reserve (later the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve) and it used as a convalescent home for wounded soldiers during WW1. Later in the 1940’s the battery was used for many years as a holiday retreat for disadvantaged children. Marilyn then bought and restored this wonderful building.
This is the third workshop holiday that I will be hosting at The Battery and below are some photographs of the previous holidays. The weather on the 2018 holiday was exceptional and most of us went swimming most days...so don't forget your swim wear!
